John Alarimo was an uncredited second director on “Ben-Hur” snd other major productions during Hollywood’s golden era of filmmaking, as well as friends with dozens of Hollywood’s iconic stars. Although you’ve never heard of John Alarimo, “The Man Who Saved Ben-Hur” director Joe Forte believes he indeed saved the smash hit film ‘Ben-Hur,” and in this documentary you will find out why. The film is an ode to all those behind-the-scenes that contribute to the magic of Hollywood filmmaking.

This inspiring, nostalgic, inspiring biographical film is the perfect treat for everyone looking forward to the “Ben-Hur” remake this fall, as well as for photography enthusiasts, film buffs, and older generations.

Revisiting his time on Ben-Hur and the years spent in Rome as an assistant director, 86 year old John Alarimo unpacks the boxes that house his memories of a by-gone Hollywood era, each memento carefully labeled and stowed.

Like a master showman curating his own finale, John unveils a trove of treasured photographs — his beautifully decrepit apartment standing in as museum and stage — the artifacts bringing to life his dazzling experiences with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Gore Vidal, Charlton Heston, Bette Davis, William Wyler, Gloria Vanderbilt, Charlie Chaplin, Mae West, Alain Delon and others. When John was young he had aspirations of becoming a song and dance man. Stung by stage fright, those dreams were never fulfilled and proximity to celebrity and fame became their stand-in. As the details of his life unfold and more startling photographs emerge, we find we are no longer digging though boxes, but unpacking the elusive truths that made the man. More than memories, they are the gateway to his soul.
