Gravitas Ventures has partnered to acquire U.S. and Canadian rights to Almost Friends, a romantic comedy from writer-director Jake Goldberger (Life of a King). ABC’s “The Good Doctor” star Freddie Highmore toplines an all-star cast and the film will have a day-and-date release on November 17.
Once a promising young chef, Charlie (Freddie Highmore, “The Good Doctor”) is now an unmotivated twenty-something who lives at home with his mom (Marg Helgenberger, “CSI”) and stepfather while working at a small movie theatre and living vicariously through his best friend, Ben (Haley Joel Osment, “Silicon Valley”). His life takes an unpredictable turn however, when he finds himself falling for local barista Amber (Odeya Rush, Goosebumps). Problem is, Amber has her own distractions- her mooching roommate (Jake Abel, Love & Mercy) a track star boyfriend (Taylor John Smith, Wolves) and steadfast plans to move to New York City. On top of that, Charlie’s estranged father (Christopher Meloni, “Law & Order: SVU”) unexpectedly re-enters his life just as he begins to take a long, hard look at where he’s going and who he wants to be. With conflict after conflict piling on, will Charlie reach his tipping point or will he finally find the path forward?
“Jake Goldberger has crafted a charming and endearing film with a superlative cast led by the amazing Freddie Highmore and Odeya Rush,” said Gravitas Director of Acquisitions Josh Spector. “Gravitas is looking forward to sharing Almost Friends with audiences everywhere.”
“This movie was a true labor of love for all involved and we are psyched to be put it out into the world,” added filmmaker Jake Goldberger.
Alex A. Ginzburg (Ordinary World), Tony Lee (Hardcore Henry) and Jim Young (Lovelace) are the producers of Almost Friends (formerly titled Holding Patterns.) Writer/Director is Jake Goldberger (Life of a King). The deal was negotiated by Josh Spector on behalf of Gravitas Ventures and Daniel Brandt and Jack Sheehan of Lotus Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers.
