For a lot of readers, a book can be an escape from the tedium of daily living, a floodlight to search the darkest recesses of the mind, a stable guide along the treacherous paths of life, a portal into a wonderful, surreal, utopian (sometimes dystopian) world. Over the years and centuries, many good books, several great, and a few amazing books have been written. Some quotes from these books have stood out for their deep meaning, relatability, catchiness, appeal to pop culture or some other quality. What good is it knowing one or three book quotes? Well, if you’re in a discussion and you use a quote, chances are that the person you’re discussing with will instantly see you as more erudite. Perhaps, it’s an interview, a presentation, an audition or just friendly banter. In any of these situations, book quotes will give you this air of someone in tune with the spirit of the times.
Here are some of the quotes that impressed us.
Feeling down or moody? Perhaps you need to motivate a friend who is currently out of it? These quotes could serve.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” — The Fellowship of the Ring, J. R. R. Tolkien
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” — Oh The Places You’ll Go, Dr. Seuss
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” — Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J. K. Rowlings.
Bring on the mushiness! Maybe some fury road quotes too (winks)
“But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams” — He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven, W. B. Yeats
“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” — Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë
“But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun” — Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare
Now, let’s mean business.
“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” —To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee.
“When you feel like criticizing anyone…just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” — The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
“Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” — Ulysses, Alfred Lord Tennyson
And now, it gets deep.
“A bear, however hard he tries, grows tubby without exercise.” — When We Were Very Young, A. A. Milne.
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” — The Tempest, William Shakespeare.
“Not all those who wander are lost.” — The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien
There are plenty of more meaningful quotes that can be found in books around you. Secrets of the universe, hidden within musty pages. Destiny waiting to bend, life about to morph, for those who hunger.
