Review by Monique Thompson
Former toy maker Sam Mullins and his wife Esther are happy to welcome a nun and six orphaned girls into their California farmhouse. Years earlier, the couple lost their 7-year-old daughter Annabelle in a tragic car accident. Terror soon strikes when one of the girls finds a seemingly innocent doll that seems to have a life of its own.
Annabelle: Creation is EXACTLY what a prequel/spinoff is supposed to be! The Conjuring franchise is raising the bar with each film and things continue to get scarier and scarier. Easily, Annabelle: Creation has to be the scariest in the collection and possibly even the scariest movie in a long time.
The new line up of characters is also a great addition to the collection, reavealing the origin of the creepy, demonic doll known as Annabelle. When the Mullins welcome a group of orphans into their old Victorian home, they could of never prepared themselves for the aftermath that would take place. After losing their daughter Bee in a tragic accident 12-years earlier, the couple is excited to have some company around. Curiosity gets the most of one of the orphans once she discovers Annabelle locked away in a closet.
I’m choosing to be extremely careful with this review because I don’t want to spoil a thing; the trailer is enough of a teaser! Everything is so right about Annabelle: Creation! Everything is pieced together so exceptionally well from the characters to the movie setting. A total standout is Lulu Wilson (Deliver Us From Evil, Ouija: Origin Of Evil) whose so darn good in horror films. Her innocent yet curious look alone is an absolute shoe in.
Now every horror movie has those moments where the characters make the dumbest decisions but as long as those dumb decisions warrant a jump scare, it’s totally worth it. The creep factor of the appearance of Annabelle alone is enough to make you wince from suspense fueled anxiousness. There are moments that just might even get an actual scream out of a few people. The musicality/sound effects are all perfect and not overdone.
Annabelle: Creation is a must see and the perfect film to end the summer while gearing up for the Halloween season!
STARRING: Anthony LaPaglia, Stephanie Sigman, Miranda Otto, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson
