With Oscars nominations just around the corner, we can’t help but wonder about potential development in some major categories. Besides the most obvious excitements of who gets the Best Picture, there are plenty of other interesting questions to ask. Very high competition is expected in Best Actress department. The beautiful and talented Jessica Chastain is among the strongest contenders.
California born Hollywood star has already proven track record of two consecutive nominations dated few years back, with the main prize still yet to come to her name. She lost to Octavia Spencer in 2012 and to Jennifer Lawrence in 2013. She surely should be able to get another shot this year. As far as Oscar predictions go, usually the Golden Globes are pretty good indication about who is going to be taken into account. Chastain was nominated, but in the end, the award went to Frances McDormand for highly praised Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Jessica Chastain is certainly used to portraying strong and independent women, as her history shows. The most memorable performances include: brilliant scientist from Interstellar, racially unbiased house wife from The Help, powerful lobbyist in Miss Sloane, the astronaut who left Matt Damon on Mars in The Martian, or the CIA agent who played a big part in taking down Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty. That last movie resulted in Oscar nomination and the only Golden Globe Award so far (out of 5 chances) in 2013. Jessica continues to build on the great heroine profile with two interesting movies made last year. The first would be The Zookeeper’s Wife which tells the incredible true story about Polish administrators of Warsaw zoo during German occupation of Poland in WWII. The couple managed to save few hundred people and animals by hiding them on their property, naturally taking on huge risks. The second film, and the one that will most likely give her the nomination, is also based on facts Molly’s Game. She plays the part of a former Olympic athlete Molly Bloom who for almost a decade used to run underground poker games with high-end clientele. The typical guests on such occasions wouldn’t be the guys carrying poker hands cheat sheet in their pockets, but rather the kinds of gents who wouldn’t mind paying millions in costly mistakes, if it only gave them the desired thrill. Such activity naturally got Molly the attention of FBI agents, and as for Jessica – the place among frontrunners for the 90th Academy Awards.
Winning, of course, won’t be easy. The rivalry should be an exciting thing to watch. Possible candidate list starts with Chastain’s fellow Golden Globe nominees: the winner Frances McDormand, plus Sally Hawkins, Michelle Williams, and as per usual – legendary Meryl Streep. Among many other actresses who could potentially jump into the competition, media usually point at: Margot Robbie for I, Tonya and another this year’s Globe winner – Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird. Next strong candidates for consideration could be: Emma Stone (Battle of Sexes), Jennifer Lawrence (Mother!), Annette Benning (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool), Diane Kruger (In the Fade), and dame Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul).
Regardless, which one of the gifted ladies will snatch the trophy, they all deserve the praise.
