Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Strad Style, which took home both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards for “Best Documentary Feature” from this year’s Slamdance Film Festival. The quirky and heartfelt documentary defies genre as its unique protagonist teeters between nerd-dom, his rustic surroundings and a profound affection for a certain musical instrument.
Strad Style will be available on demand November 7 and in DVD/Blu-ray November 14.
Rural Ohio hillbilly Daniel Houck has a peculiar obsession with Italian luthier and crafter of string instruments, Antonio Stradivari, and all things violin. Driven by this obsession, through the magic of social media, Danny convinces a famous European concert violinist that he can make a copy of one of the most famous and valuable violins in the world. It is not safe to assume Danny will get his happy ending as he battles mismatched parts, poverty, a ticking clock, and – most of all – himself.
Danny puts everything on the line for one shot at glory, but really… can he actually make a violin that will look and SOUND good? Does the introverted guy from backcountry Ohio stand a chance at “Strad Style?”
Filmmaker Stefan Avalos shared, “The Strad Style journey has been incredible. Discovering Daniel and his, ‘you gotta see it to believe it’ story, along with the amazing audience response at festivals across the world is exactly the sort of thing that a filmmaker dreams of. To have Gravitas distributing the movie — knowing that this crazy, wonderful, hilarious story is going to be seen by the public, across the U.S. and Canada is absolutely amazing.”
