Fans having been frothing at the mouth for the new Star Wars since its announcement in 2012 and the agonizing wait is finally over. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is hitting the big screen and we fully expect the latest entry to shatter box office records. The movie was premiered at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood to much fanfare and has brought back everyone’s favorite characters from the original trilogy while introducing several new ones set to become favorites in their own right.
The early responses from those at the premier have been overwhelmingly positive. Not only that, but The Force Awakens is projected to outsell all of the previous episodes and current box office record holder, Avatar, which raked in $2.8 billion worldwide. There’s a prediction of $180 to $220 million for the opening weekend of Star Wars. Although, we expect these numbers to be much higher if the movie is as good as the early reports imply.
When the movie was announced, the speculation surrounding the characters and plot quickly began in earnest. And now, fans are starting to see it all pay off in more ways than one. The entire cast is out of the bag, but for the longest time there were a lot of questions as to whether several fan-favorites would be returning (along with the rest of the jedi).
While Han Solo had always been pretty much a sure thing, for a while there many were questioning whether his lovable Wookiee co-pilot, Chewbacca, would make an appearance. At one point, there were even 11/10 odds backing the Kashyyyk native and whether he would fly the Millenium Falcon once again. Thankfully, any fears were misplaced and Chewie is front and center in The Force Awakens. He’s even played by the original actor, Peter Mayhew. The 7-foot-1 actor is 71 years old, but it doesn’t look like age has slowed Mayhew down as he showed up at the premiere wearing the original medal Chewbacca receives in Star Wars: A New Hope for his help in the battle against the original Death Star.
Many others actors from the original trilogy will also return including Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker (as beloved droids C-3PO and R2-D2, respectively) as well as the classic trio of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford (naturally as Luke, Leia and Han).
Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes place approximately 30 years after Return of the Jedi and focuses on a cast of new characters including the fierce heroine, Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) and a former stormtrooper, Finn (played by John Boyega). The latter finds himself lost on a strange planet and embarks with Rey on an amazing adventure across the galaxy. Along the way, the pair meet new villains and allies while exploring exotic worlds never before seen in the Star Wars universe.
More details on the film are hard to find and it’s probably for the best, because no one wants to have the movie event of the year spoiled for them beforehand. If you haven’t gotten tickets yet, you might be out of luck if you’re planning to see the movie Christmas Day. However, rest assured this one will be at the multiplex for a good while, so there will be plenty of opportunities to join the Rebel Alliance if you’re local showing is sold out.
