DFW Theater Review: ‘Cabaret’ Sizzles From The Very Beginning

Review by Monique Thompson

Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd — and to leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-World War II Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times?

The Tony Award-winning production, straight from Broadway, has returned to Dallas on stage at the beautiful Winspear Opera House. A theatrical masterpiece, Cabaret sizzles from beginning to end! Cabaret takes you exactly where it should: step inside as a patron to the infamous Kit Kat Klub in Berlin and let the beautiful ladies, and gentlemen, wow you with their performances and intrigue you with their juicy drama that’s going on behind the scene.

Before the show even gets started, you’ll notice the dancers as they one by one make their way to the stage about 10 minutes before show time. Don’t be alarmed, they’re only here to stretch! Once the show kicks off, you’ll know as emcee Sally immediately grabs your attention and sets the atmosphere on fire. Cabaret has everything a musical should have, audience participation, wonderful music numbers, talented singers and dancers, but most importantly, drama! The stage set isn’t extremely over the top, which makes for simple, non-distracting transitions from scene to scene. This number is a definite must see for theater lovers and will entertain right from the start.
