The past comes back to haunt game warden Joe Pickett and his family with devastating effect in the thrilling new novel from #1 New York Times–bestselling author C. J. Box.
Joe Pickett, it seems, has a knack for drawing trouble to himself and leaves lots of dead bodies along the way. The basis of this yarn is a feud between the Cates clan (and a nasty lot they are) and Joe Pickett, the Game Warden in Wyoming. From start to finish, Joe’s family are threatened and his acquaintances meet sticky ends.
The story’s setting is very well-drawn and the cold, icy winds from the Montana mountains, the terrified dash from death by the wildlife, and the traps laid by men for men and animals leaves you chilled to the bone. For the guys and girls who hunt and fish the wild realms, this is terrific reading. For stay-in-front-of-the-fire folk, with a good book, not so much.
This book is number seventeen in the Joe Pickett novels and his characters, to his fans, don’t need much dressing but for those that have become acquainted with Pickett for the first time, one is left wishing the characters that are laid out, had some depth to them. It didn’t happen for me, I could put no face nor expression on the Pickett family or the Cates mob. As the story unfolds, the retribution by the Cates, for the harm done to them by Joe in the line of duty, is chilling and I guess when your passion in life is hunting down and killing animals, the same level of amoral feelings can apply to human beings. In the long run, the Cates hunt down the Pickett family with the intent on harming them and Joe makes sure that the bad and evil Cates are foiled.
I have tried to find a word to describe the scene of a particular murder in the story because I was disturbed by it, and I just can’t find the right one. Suffice to say, evil soulless, and Godless all come to mind but they still are not enough. A good read no doubt for fans of the series and enough open ends to ensure another story is on its way.
