There’s nothing like a book grabbing you from the first page and keeping your attention throughout the whole book. I didn’t want to put it down until I finished it. Grim Death And Bill The Electrocuted Criminal by Mike Mignola & THomas E. Sniegoski (St. Martin’s Press; in stores Tuesday, February 28) is just as I said in the heading, all sorts of awesomeness!
Written as a 1930 pulp-style novel (to quote the press notes) it’s the story of Bentley Hawthorne, who’s is a servant of death called Grim Death. He sees ghosts of people who were killed before their time. His job is to seek out the murderers and get justice for the victims so they can cross over (even death has a conscience it seems). Dressed in a skull mask and given powers when needed to get the job done. The ghosts haunt him until his work is done. They come into his body and tell their story with as much information as they can provide.
The authors do a good back story of Bentley growing up and how he became a servant for death. Aided by his longtime worker Pym (who was there before he was born) we learn that Bentley had a condition and was not expected to live very long. His parents and a professor who studies death, a plan is made to try and save Bentley.
The story inter-cuts with his backstory and today. His latest ghost that has come to him is a said woman who was killed by her boyfriend (who confessed and is on death row). All the evidence points to him but since she has come to him, there’s more to the story and now Bentley can’t rest until he solves the case. It all leads to a shocking discovery and showdown.
Here’s to hoping this will be a series of books and it’s also something I could see as a TV series on Syfy or better yet HBO or Showtime (so they can be a bit more graphic).
So pick it up in stores on Tuesday, February 28th, you won’t be disappointed!
