Book Review: ‘Barely Legal’ Is Another Fun Stuart Woods Book Featuring Herbie Fisher With Stone Barrington

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you’ll know I am a fan of Stuart Woods and his Stone Barrington series of books. He puts out a new one every three months or so. Sometimes they are not Stone Barrington novels but novels featuring characters from other stories. This is one of them. It’s a Herbie Fisher story with Stone, Dino and others that are normally in all the other books. Barely Legal is written by Stuart Woods and Parnell Hall (G.P. Putnam’s Son; in stores Tuesday, August 8).

Herbie Fisher has been in a previous story. He was in trouble for shooting a mob guy. He got out of it and even won 30 million in the lottery. Stone got him a job at his law firm Woodman & Weld, as a junior partner. Things have been going good for him. Until now that is. He’s engaged to a hot, young actress (or so he thinks the is). Turns out she’s a hooker with a plan to use him for his money (and this isn’t the first time Herbie has choose the wrong woman). Then there’s Mario Payday who claims Herbie owes him $90,000. from a marker that has been given to him (Herbie payed the money back but there’s no proof). Then he’s called by a co-worker to take over a case that he’s defending that involves councilman’s on accused of selling drugs. Seems the lawyer is being intimated by mob to get David (the accused) to go to jail.

So Herbie is now being squeezed by the mob, Mario and oblivious to his girlfriend. When his girlfriend is murdered in their bed, he’s framed for the killing. Stone and Dino know he didn’t do it. Dino personally oversees then case. Herbie soon takes matters into his own hands and devises a plan that hopefully will end all this once and for all.

After a few books that I wasn’t crazy about Stuart has been on a roll with the last few stories. These books are so easy to read (note to any editors out there….read these books as a guide to how books should be published). If you’ve never read aby Stuart/Stone stores now worries. You can jump right in. Stuart is really good at giving back story so you’re not lost at all about who or what is going on.
