Review by Monique Thompson
When a wounded Christian Grey tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.
Jamie Dornan’s back muscles….that is all! (le sigh) Well it’s quite obvious this review will be from the female perspective so let’s see if things can veer away from the superficial beauty of Dornan’s bod.
Dakota Johnson and Dornan return to the big screen in the 2nd installment to the famed Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Based on the romance novels written by E.L. James, Fifty Shades Darker is the perfect title as things pick up right where the first film left off, diving deeper into the dark life of multi-millionaire Christian Grey. A fling from Christian’s past just might now threaten to tear he and Ana apart.
At the end of the first film, Anastasia Steele basically leaves Christian’s penthouse, upset at how turned on he was by inflicting so much pain on her during their escapade in their infamous red room. I think what I love most, well second to Dornan’s back of course J, is the mushy vulnerability that Christian has in this film. While he remains domineering, this time around, he makes the ultimate mistake by really “catching feelings” for Ms. Steele and that vulnerability is all through the film.
What initially attracted Christian to Anastasia in the beginning was definitely her submissive nature, but he quickly learns that she actually isn’t going to be as easy as he’d presumed, when then appears to be more of a turn on for Gray. Johnson is by far the perfect actress for the role of Anastasia. She’s very career driven and independent, yet still sexually submissive when it comes to Christian. It’s clear that Ana’s even way more confident with her body. (Did anyone other than me hate the fact that her legs were so hairy in the first film)!
In terms of the books, I’ve tried multiple times to get into them, even listening to the audio version, but that just doesn’t work! However, the films on the other hand get right down to what everyone is always curious about in terms of the Fifty Shades of Gray: the sex scenes. Christian and Ana are really their own sex slaves. The infamous ben-wa balls that were not included in the first film finally make their debut! While getting dressed for a ball (no pun intended), Christian pulls out the set of weighted balls that Ana doesn’t have the slightest clue as to what they are or more importantly what he has planned for them.
Fifty Shades Darker, is fun and raunchy! For those like me that prefer not to read the books and just wait for it to be brought to life, I’ll save the spoilers of the story line but Jamie Dornan’s back muscles alone should get you into theaters.
