Blu-ray Review: ‘Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey Edition)’

Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas was a classic children’s Christmas animated special that still airs every year during the holiday season. Ron Howard took the tale and made it into a full-length movie starring Jim Carrey (perfect casting). Under his direction he made a really fun, colorful live action version of the tale.

While all the Whos in Whoville are celebrating Christmas, the Grinch (Jim Carrey) is looking for ways to make it bad for them. He hates Christmas and everything associated with it. So no one in town likes the Grinch (not even his dog Max). When the Grinch saves Cindy Lou’s (Taylor Momsen) life she becomes interested in who he is. She learns his back story and wants to make him part of the town celebrations.

The Grinch decides he is going to ruin Christmas he flies around with Max to all the houses and steals all the Christmas presents. Cindy Lou goes to him and he reveals he’s going to drop all the presents off the mountain. When he hears her crying, he has an epiphany and understands now that the holiday is about family and not presents. He is redeemed and starts a new life.

Everyone should know this story and Ron Howard and his team had to write more than we ever saw in the animated version including back story. Under Ron’s direction the movie has the perfect look to it. The songs, sets and even using the rhymes from the original story. Jim Carrey could not be a better casting choice as the Grinch. Everything about the movie clicks.
