Blu-ray Review: ‘Animal Kingdom: The Complete First Season’ Rocks

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

When 17 year old Joshua ‘J’ Cody finds his mom dead from a drug overdose there’s no one else to call but his aunt Janine known as Smurf (Ellen Barkin), the head of the Cody family. And what a family they are. Their business is robbing people (although they have a front so they don’t get caught). J is thrown into this family and business. When one of the sons Pope (Shawn Hatosy) returns to the family after being in jail, things get worse. He is jealous of J and causes issues. Also all the sons are tired of Smurf and want their share of money and to be on their own. Well Smurf will have none of this and teaches the boys lessons along the way. The cops are also on to them and try to capture them.

Animal Kingdom is an intense drama with an all-star cast of Ellen Barkin (Ocean’s Thirteen), Scott Speedman (The Strangers) Shawn Hatosy (Southland), Ben Robson (Vikings), Jake Weary (Pretty Little Liars), Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), Daniella Alonso (Revolution) and Molly Gordon (I Am Sam) is in ways the new Sopranos.

The new season of Animal Kingdom premieres on Tuesday, May 30. You can pick up Animal Kingdom: The Complete First Season on Tuesday, April 25.
